Lost Your Marriage Certificate? Getting a Duplicate or Certified Copy from BMC in Mumbai

Marriage certificates go missing in house moves, floods and family disputes, and are often needed urgently for a visa or passport. How to download or obtain a duplicate or certified copy from BMC, what to do for older registrations, Special Marriage Act certificates, and copies for use abroad.

The original marriage certificate is often the one document nobody can find when it is suddenly needed: for a spouse visa, a passport, a bank, or after a death in the family. A lost or damaged certificate is easy to replace if the marriage was registered. Here is how it works in Mumbai.

First: was the marriage registered?

A wedding ceremony and a registered marriage are different things. If you have only a nikahnama, a temple certificate or wedding photographs, there may be no BMC registration to copy. In that case, the answer is to register the marriage now. See late marriage registration in Mumbai.

Ways to get a copy

Situation Route
Marriage registered online with BMC in recent years Log in to BMC’s online services with the application details and download the digitally signed certificate, where the facility is available
Any registration with BMC, including older ones Apply at the ward office where it was registered for a certified copy (or duplicate) from the register
Marriage under the Special Marriage Act Apply to the Marriage Officer’s office for a certified extract from the Marriage Certificate Book
Married outside Mumbai Apply to the registering authority of that place

What to take to the ward office

  • An application with the names of both spouses, the date of marriage, and the date or year of registration (and the registration number if you have it).
  • Identity proof of the applicant.
  • A copy of the old certificate, if you have one, even a photograph.
  • The prescribed fee for the copy.

For older registrations, the office may need to search the register, which takes longer if the date is uncertain. Give as much detail as you can.

If the certificate was lost

  • Report the loss to the police. Mumbai Police accepts lost-document reports online, and the acknowledgement is useful if any office asks why you need a duplicate.
  • Apply for a certified copy as above.

Copies for use abroad

  • Foreign authorities usually want a certified copy or original-format certificate, often recently issued, and apostilled or legalised. See apostille of a marriage certificate.
  • If the certificate is in Marathi, the embassy may also want a certified translation.
  • Check the spelling against your passport before the apostille. See correcting a marriage certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a downloaded certificate valid?

A digitally signed certificate issued through BMC’s online system is generally accepted. Some foreign authorities may still want a certified copy from the office.

Can someone else collect the copy for me?

Many offices allow collection by a family member or representative with an authority letter and identity proof. Ask the ward office.

The ward office cannot find our record. What now?

Ask for a written reply, then take advice. If the marriage was never registered, registering it now is usually the solution.
