The Maharashtra Government Gazette, published by the Directorate of Government Printing, Stationery and Publications (DGPS), provides a Part Two e-Gazette facility for individuals to formally notify a change of name, date of birth, or religion, along with a miscellaneous category for other notifications. Publication in the Gazette is a commonly required step when updating identity records, but it has specific limits that are important to understand before applying.
Services available under Part Two of the e-Gazette
- Name Change — notification of a change from one name to another, including a change of surname.
- Date of Birth / Age Change — notification of a correction or change to a recorded date of birth.
- Religion Change — notification of a change of religion.
- Miscellaneous — other notifications that do not fall within the above three categories.
What Gazette publication does — and does not — do
Important: publication of a name, date of birth, or religion change in the Maharashtra Government Gazette does not automatically update or correct other government and institutional records. Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank accounts, school and university records, driving licence, voter ID, and similar records each have to be updated separately with the concerned authority or institution, generally using the Gazette notification as supporting proof.
Fees and processing time
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fee | Prescribed by the department and displayed on the portal at the time of application; applicants in reserved categories pay a lower fee |
| Processing period | 15 days (no instant or urgent processing facility is available) |
| Refund, where applicable | Approximately 10–12 days |
The e-Gazette service is a notified service under the Maharashtra Right to Public Services Act, 2015, which sets out a defined service delivery timeline for the department.
Documents typically required
- Proof of identity (such as Aadhaar, PAN, or passport)
- Proof of address
- A sworn affidavit stating the change being notified
- Where relevant, supporting legal documents — for example, a marriage certificate (for a change of surname on marriage), a court order, or an adoption deed
- A recent photograph meeting the prescribed specifications (160×210 pixels, JPEG format, 5–20 KB)
Points to note before applying
- For a minor’s name change, the application must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
- Once an application is submitted, it cannot be edited — details should be carefully checked before submission, since an error typically means filing a fresh application.
- Because Gazette publication does not, by itself, correct other records, it is generally advisable to plan the follow-up updates to Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, and other records once the Gazette notification is issued.
Step by step
- Decide which Part Two service applies: name, date of birth, religion or miscellaneous.
- Prepare the affidavit and supporting documents for that service.
- Prepare the photograph in the specified size, and scan the documents clearly.
- Fill the online application, check every entry, and submit, since it cannot be edited afterwards.
- Wait for publication, which the department states will be within 15 days, and download the published Gazette.
- Update Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, school or university and other records one by one.
Frequently asked questions: Gazette name change
Is a Gazette notification enough to change my name everywhere?
No. It is supporting proof. Each authority has its own procedure for updating its records.
Is there an urgent service?
No instant or urgent service is available; the stated period is 15 days.
Can a surname be changed after marriage?
Yes, usually with the marriage certificate as the supporting document.
What if the application contains an error?
It cannot be edited after submission, so a fresh application is generally needed. Where a refund applies, it takes about 10 to 12 days.
